Noëlle Jen-ai Santos is a millennial, Afro-Latina, hailing from the Bronx in New York City. OK, this third-person mumbo is torture…
I’m Noëlle; representing the Souf Bronx. You know where that is no matter where in the world you’re from. I was born to Puerto Rican and stolen African parents on December 23, 1986. *Father exits stage left* and I was raised by a 17-year-old recipe of Rosie Perez, house music, and sprinkle of Salt & Peppa (I guess that made my mother Paprika), my entrepreneur grandmother, and my Archie Bunker-ish Irish grandfather who was an army-vet from Illinois. *New father enters stage right* and at 8 years old he moved us to his neighborhood of Soundview where my parents groomed me Black Panther & HGTV-style; lessons of Louis Farrakhan, Katie Brown, Tupac, Oprah, Lil’ Kim, and Suze Orman fine-tuned me into the multifaceted woman you see today.
Sh*t happened, and by the time I was 16 I was living on my own in Parkchester and a high school graduate. Since then, I’ve become a resident of Crotona Park East and I have earned a bachelor’s degree in business/accounting, a master’s degree in human resources management, and hold the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Society for Human Resources Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) designations. I currently work full-time as the Director of Human Resources & Payroll for a health information technology & analytics firm in Tribeca. I love my career!
I am striving towards opening the only independent bookstore in the entire borough. (Really, the only one. How disgusting!) Lit. BookBar will be just as multifaceted as me: a bookstore/wine bar/community event space in the South Bronx. I dream of a graffiti & chandelier theme, much like my life.
So there you have it! If you’re completely confused at this point, good! My identity crisis totally makes this blog.
